| Hi everybody! I am a new user at this board.
With this thread i would like to discuss using the vr920 for wearable computing.
I have myself constructed a simple wearable computer and I am currently using it with the icuiti vr920 because of the vr920's low price, relatively high res and good availability.

Wearing the computer
System specs:
VIA nano-itx board (1ghz, vga, lan, audio integrated) power consumption approx. 10w
1GB RAM
4GB CF Card for now
9.6v 2220mAh batterypack
Gyration wireless mouse
mini usb keyboard
OS: Ubuntu Linux
Plastic case made in about 1h

The computer with hmd, batterypack, keyboard & mouse
Future plans include:
a compact / better looking case.
larger memory card
Internet connectivity
The computer works fine with only some minor video driver issues in ubuntu.
One major issue with the vr920 and wearables is its lack of transparency :-/
I'm thinking of maybe trying to modify it using some prisms or beam splitter mirrors to make it see-through.
Suggestions??

| | Maybe you should just add a webcam. My wearable computer is just a bag with my laptop in, my VR920, and a Wii remote. Unfortunately my stupid bluetooth adapter disconnects whenever I bump it, which is VERY annoying, because then I have to open up my laptop, do lots of complicated things to reconnect my wiimote, and start again. What kind of battery life do you get? |

| Well, adding a webcam might work, but then i would loose my depth perception, I guess it is possible to add 2 cams and make some software which displays the cameras in stereoscopic 3d. But wouldn't there be som lag then? which could cause nausea maybe :-/ ? I haven't tried it though.
Maybe you could use a pc-card BT adapter? that would maybe be less sensitive to bumping.
I get about 2.5h with my current battery. I'm thinking of upgrading it to li-ion which would save me some weight and add more time. |

| Thanks for all the positive comments!
wuhlei: Those cameras sound expensive, do you know of pricing and where to get hold of them?
Yes, i made the case myself, it's very crude :-/
Hezeckiel, I'm also thinking about the EEE PC, It could easily be used in a wearable system. Though it is quite wide (22cm)
it's still compact, especially if the screen is removed.
The non-see through aspect of the HMD still is a major problem though. It's really bugging me, but i'm not sure what to do about it. |

| Wiimote interfaces with bluetooth? My laptop has integrated bluetooth. Do I need any special software to use one as a bat?
I'm this close to buying a VR920, and learning something like this brings me closer still, (the 800x600 pushed me back a bit, but learning something as well built and available as a wiimote might be used as an input device pushes me forward by more than the resolution pushed me back.) |
