| Hey guys, i was browsing the sharper image site, bumped into this rather B.A. device... and was wondering if you guys had made any progress on Mac OSX compatibility... i saw in the FAQ that you said it works as far as audio, but the 3D and headtracking functions were not on-line right now ...
a) wondering if any progress was made on the 3D aspect/headtracking
b) wondering, if i were to buy the product NOW, would a software update (assuming you all figure out how to make the 3d/headtracking work with OSX) be all that i need to get those functions online, or would it be completely new hardware pieces to get those functions up and running ? .... or can you even speculate on that?
c) i have a powerbook pro mac laptop, 2 USB ports, and i use both for other things--- one of which is a fan-cooler that plugs in via USB, the plug has like a splitter though, so you can plug in a 2nd device into it--- just wondering if you could speculate if that'd be ample power supply or if it needs to be directly plugged into the comp's USB (i dont know if there's like deteriorating power supply depending on splits like that)
anything else of interest about OSX-compatibility would be awesome & much appreciate, have 2 friends i play world of warcraft with that i turned onto this, and they have similar setups/questions, so w/e is appreciated
thanks in advance |

| Hi there.
The VR920 does work with MacOSX right now, but in a limited capacity.
3D functionality is not supported yet, but display (640x480, 800x600, 1024x768), the earbuds and microphone all work out of the box, without any drivers installed.
There is a control panel that you can install (which will be available shortly... within the next week or so) which will let you calibrate and test the head tracking. This also includes a couple of simple apps that hook into things like Virtue Desktops, and specifically, AppleScript to trigger system events, change desktops, all that fun stuff.
There's also a SDK for you programmers out there that will be available shortly as well which will let you include VR920 tracking in your own application (it's a .framework, like other standard OS X interfaces.) The SDK also provides an interface for C, Java, and Processing.

| | Glad to hear about the upcoming availability of the control panel, although I see it's been almost a month and a half since that was posted. What is the current status? |

| I just realized that there weren't any annoucements with regard to the Mac SDK.
The Macintosh SDK is available through the Vuzix website:
http://vuzix.com/support/downloads_drivers.html
The "Installation Software" will install the control panel for you to calibrate and test your VR920.
The "SDK" enables you to use the tracking functionality of the VR920 within your application.
There are also bindings for Java, and even a couple of "Processing" sketches to show the basics of how it works in that environment.
The minimum requirements for this are OS X 10.4 on any Mac with USB. It has been tested on a few various systems including:
PowerBook G3 "Pismo", iBook G3, PowerBook G4 "Titanium", Mac Mini x86 Core Duo, Mac Pro x86 Quad Core
(The Windows-Java bindings are in progress and should be out soon.)

| The Vuzix iWear Control Panel also works on a MacBook Pro 2.66 running Leopard. |

| Noted.

The SDK includes a little program that sends applescripts based on head position. It probably wouldn't be difficult to have it tell Spaces to change desktop based on where you're 'looking'. The demonstration code i have in there shows how to hook it in to VirtueDesktops, but that's kind of obsoleted with Spaces.

| | Uh. Too late I saw this thread. I tried using the vr920 on an oldish G4 powerbook running 10.3.9. The system preference pane installed but woudn't load and the glasses didn't work though they do appear in the display preferences. I hope trying this out didn't mess up the glasses somehow because I've only been able to use them once on a vista laptop. There's no reference on the download site as to what version of the mac operating system is required for the mac version to run as far as I can recall. |
