Since the 640x480 resolution makes text very hard to read with a 1024x768 desktop it would make a lot of sense to be able to pan around the desktop using the head tracking. Lots of video drivers already allow for a virtual desktop that is much bigger than the screen's resolution...they pan around as the mouse hits the edges. It would be the same idea except you turn your head slightly to see the extra area of the desktop. Hopefully it's pretty easy to implement since it doesn't require 3d.

I have an injury that often leaves me bedridden, having to rest my neck for hours. It's very hard to use a laptop when laying down without propping up into a sitting position, which defeats the point. Glasses would be great, but Windows isn't easy to use at resolutions below 1024x768. Panning would allow for much larger desktops.

I'm sure there are other good cases for supporting the non-gaming use of the glasses. Privacy when traveling for example. Not having a screen on would keep from waking up my wife at night . Who knows, it could end up making huge desktop areas very easy to use and become a popular alternative to multiple monitors!

Hello, if you use vr920 for desktop, i need 800/600 resolution and tweak windows text size or use accessibility tools. If your tweak is good, see all text.

It's almost finished.

I just need to fix up a few things so it doesn't flicker so much.

It won't be limited to 1024x768. The desktop will stretch all the way around 360 degrees horizontally, and 180 degrees vertically.

Which works out to a resolution of 9000x4500 if you use the real resolution and FOV of the VR920. The best part is... it uses the exact same amount of memory as normal 640x480.

Unfortunately you won't be able to make individual windows larger than the screen size yet. But you can move windows around anywhere within the sphere.

It's working nicely now when you are sitting or standing.

Unfortunately the SDK isn't really designed for headtracking while you are lying on your back. But the hardware is perfectly capable of it, so I may have to use it directly like I did with the crouching and jumping.

It won't be long now...

OK, try this:

http://rapidshare.com/files/59195427/GlovePIETrackedDesktop.zip

It doesn't work when you are lying on your back yet.

But other than that, it should work.

No, I didn't plan on fixing the wallpaper. I assumed people would just switch off the wallpaper. I didn't actually test it with wallpaper yet. Try it without the wallpaper and see if that is better. I use just a plain coloured background.

Yes, it is kind of funny using the windows as post-its.   I used roughly the actual FOV, which means that I can place windows over real-world objects and they sort-of follow those objects as I turn my head. So I can have a window over my TV, another window over the light on my ceiling, another window on my bed, etc. It makes it easier to remember where I put things.

@CarlKenner: First of all Thanks very much for your work. (tried GlovePie with the wiimote and it works really well)

I really like the idea of the unlimited desktop and wanted to try your 360 degree desktop solution for the VR920 as well, but unfortunately the rapidshare link does not work anymore.

Do you have another location where I can get the GlovePIETrackedDesktop.zip ?

Or is it already included in one of the GlovePie releases?

Is there any plan to add head tracking around the descktop as a formal part of the VR920 software? Could there be if we asked?

Bryan,

One of our software guys has been working on this, although Carl's approach seems to be much more ambitious. If we can get it functioning the way we want it to, it will start to be released with our software. This means you'll be able to get it by downloading our updated software from the Downloads and Drivers section in the Support page of our site.
