Consider a suggestive input device, something similar to how t9word works on a texting phone.
For mice, get a usb touchpad, and velcro it to your off-hand. That's what I'm doing.
And how could you do something like this and NOT wear it in public? =D

RE: Wearable computer

For those looking for a cheap platform to run this off of that comes with it's own batteries, consider looking at netbooks/subnotebooks.
I'm working with an EEE 901 with mine, and if you install the windows 7 RC you can get some really powerful voice recognition sequences running.
That being said, the new Vuzix product slated to be released this fall (The Wrap920AV) would be the ideal solution for wearable computing. If the price on that is < $500 I'm switching to that fo sho.

RE: Wearable computer

YES! Just try it with 2 webcams, the cheapest ;-)

You could have 2 cams, both outputing directly on your vr920... No image processing no nothing except an overlay.:w00t:

You could even have a low priority process do some calculations on some specific frames of your choice and have it display the result afterward... Depending on the type of calculations, you might get near RT processing...

RE: Wearable computer

Wiimote interfaces with bluetooth? My laptop has integrated bluetooth. Do I need any special software to use one as a bat?
I'm this close to buying a VR920, and learning something like this brings me closer still, (the 800x600 pushed me back a bit, but learning something as well built and available as a wiimote might be used as an input device pushes me forward by more than the resolution pushed me back.)

RE: Wearable computer

Not sure how I missed this thread before, but nice job!
RE: Wearable computer

Wow! Though it is quite wide (22cm)
it's still compact, especially if the screen is removed.

The non-see through aspect of the HMD still is a major problem though. It's really bugging me, but i'm not sure what to do about it.

RE: Wearable computer

great job looks pretty cool, but one day i would see some gamer walking and playing a fps, moving his wiimote and head around lol!:P

RE: Wearable computer

Good Job.

I want do the same but i see the new Asus EEEPC...

Don't know what the better... But wouldn't there be som lag then? which could cause nausea maybe :-/ ? I haven't tried it though.

Maybe you could use a pc-card BT adapter? that would maybe be less sensitive to bumping.

I get about 2.5h with my current battery. I'm thinking of upgrading it to li-ion which would save me some weight and add more time. :)

RE: Wearable computer

Maybe you should just add a webcam.

My wearable computer is just a bag with my laptop in, my VR920, and a Wii remote. Unfortunately my stupid bluetooth adapter disconnects whenever I bump it, which is VERY annoying, because then I have to open up my laptop, do lots of complicated things to reconnect my wiimote, and start again.

What kind of battery life do you get?

Wearable computer

Hi everybody! I am a new user at this board.
With this thread i would like to discuss using the vr920 for wearable computing.

I have myself constructed a simple wearable computer and I am currently using it with the icuiti vr920 because of the vr920's low price, relatively high res and good availability.

Wearing the computer

System specs:
VIA nano-itx board (1ghz, vga, lan, audio integrated) power consumption approx. 10w
1GB RAM
4GB CF Card for now
9.6v 2220mAh batterypack
Gyration wireless mouse
mini usb keyboard
OS: Ubuntu Linux
Plastic case made in about 1h :D

The computer with hmd, batterypack, keyboard & mouse

Future plans include:
a compact / better looking case.
larger memory card
Internet connectivity

The computer works fine with only some minor video driver issues in ubuntu.

One major issue with the vr920 and wearables is its lack of transparency :-/
I'm thinking of maybe trying to modify it using some prisms or beam splitter mirrors to make it see-through.
Suggestions??
